Smart Eco-Parks Program

The Smart Eco-Parks Program is Backyard Farmers' flagship community development initiative that transforms underutilized public spaces into vibrant, environmentally sustainable hubs for learning, food production, recreation, and climate action. By integrating urban agriculture, indigenous greening, environmental education, renewable energy solutions, waste management, and community wellness, Smart Eco-Parks create spaces where people and nature thrive together.

More than just parks, Smart Eco-Parks are living ecosystems that empower communities to become active participants in building healthier, greener, and more resilient neighbourhoods. They serve as centres for skills development, youth empowerment, biodiversity conservation, food security, environmental stewardship, and social cohesion.

Why We Need Smart Eco-Parks

Communities across South Africa continue to face pressing challenges, including food insecurity, unemployment, climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and a shortage of safe, accessible green spaces.

Smart Eco-Parks provide an integrated, community-led solution to these challenges by:

  • Promoting household and community food security through sustainable food production.
  • Restoring degraded environments through indigenous tree planting and biodiversity conservation.
  • Creating safe, inclusive public spaces that encourage recreation, learning, and community engagement.
  • Equipping young people with practical green skills and environmental leadership opportunities.
  • Encouraging responsible waste management, recycling, and circular economy practices.
  • Building climate resilience through sustainable land management and environmental education.
  • Strengthening community ownership and participation in local development.
  • By investing in Smart Eco-Parks, we are investing in healthier people, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future.

    Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Smart Eco-Parks Program directly contributes to several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

SDG 2 – Zero Hunger: Supporting sustainable agriculture and improving access to nutritious food.
SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Promoting healthy lifestyles through green spaces, physical activity, and improved environmental health.
SDG 4 – Quality Education: Providing environmental education, practical learning, and skills development opportunities.
SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: Creating green jobs, entrepreneurship opportunities, and livelihoods within local communities.
SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Developing inclusive, safe, resilient, and environmentally sustainable public spaces.
SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: Encouraging waste reduction, recycling, composting, and sustainable resource management.
SDG 13 – Climate Action: Building community resilience and promoting local action to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
SDG 15 – Life on Land: Protecting biodiversity, restoring ecosystems, and increasing indigenous vegetation.
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Bringing together communities, government, civil society, educational institutions, and the private sector to achieve lasting impact.

Through the Smart Eco-Parks Program, Backyard Farmers is demonstrating that community-led environmental action can transform lives, restore ecosystems, and build a future where people and nature flourish together.
