Garden-School Program

The Garden-School Program is a flagship initiative of Backyard Farmers' Green-Schools Initiative, designed to transform schools into centres of environmental learning, sustainable food production, and climate action. We partner with schools to establish productive vegetable gardens and green learning spaces that serve as living classrooms, where learners gain practical knowledge while developing a lifelong appreciation for agriculture, nutrition, and environmental stewardship.

Our approach goes beyond simply planting gardens. We work alongside educators, learners, parents, and school communities to create sustainable garden systems that become an integral part of the school's culture and learning environment. Through hands-on participation, learners develop practical skills in food production, water conservation, composting, biodiversity, and sustainable land management, while strengthening values of responsibility, teamwork, and community service.
The gardens also provide opportunities for schools to supplement nutrition programs, improve the appearance of school grounds, and create safe, inspiring spaces that encourage learning, innovation, and community engagement.

Why We Need the Garden-School Program

Many schools, particularly those in underserved communities, have limited access to practical environmental education and sustainable food production opportunities. At the same time, South Africa continues to face challenges such as food insecurity, poor nutrition, climate change, youth unemployment, and declining environmental awareness.

The Garden-School Program addresses these challenges by:

  • Creating outdoor learning environments that bring environmental and agricultural education to life.
  • Teaching learners practical gardening, food production, and climate-smart agricultural skills.
  • Promoting healthy eating habits and improved nutrition through the cultivation of fresh vegetables.
  • Encouraging environmental responsibility, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management.
  • Supporting schools in developing resilient, productive, and attractive learning environments.
  • Strengthening collaboration between schools, parents, communities, and local stakeholders.
  • Inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders, innovators, and responsible citizens.
  • By integrating food production with education, the Garden-School Program equips learners with practical life skills while fostering healthier schools, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future.

    Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Garden-School Program contributes directly to the achievement of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 2 – Zero Hunger: Growing fresh, nutritious food at schools to help tackle hunger and support sustainable local food systems.
  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Building healthier habits among learners through nutritious eating, hands-on activity, and improved overall wellness.
  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: Bringing lessons to life with hands-on environmental and agricultural learning that reinforces what's taught in the classroom.
  • SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation: Teaching learners to use water wisely and adopt conservation practices in the school garden.
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Turning school grounds into greener, healthier spaces that strengthen the resilience of the wider community.
  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: Introducing learners to composting, recycling, and other practices that reduce waste and manage resources responsibly.
  • SDG 13 – Climate Action: Growing climate awareness among learners and giving them practical tools to respond to environmental challenges.
  • SDG 15 – Life on Land: Supporting biodiversity, healthier soil, and the use of indigenous plants to help restore local ecosystems.
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Bringing together schools, government, communities, civil society, and the private sector to grow environmental education and sustainable development.
  • Through the Garden-School Program, Backyard Farmers is cultivating more than gardens—we are nurturing knowledgeable learners, healthier schools, resilient communities, and a generation committed to protecting the environment and building a sustainable future.
