Schools-Recycling Program

The Schools-Recycling Program is an integral component of Backyard Farmers' Green-Schools Initiative, designed to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility by empowering learners and schools to reduce waste, conserve resources, and embrace sustainable practices. Through education, practical recycling systems, and community participation, the program transforms schools into champions of the circular economy and environmental stewardship.

We work with schools to establish effective recycling program that encourage the separation, collection, reuse, and responsible disposal of recyclable materials. Learners are equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to understand the environmental impacts of waste, while actively participating in recycling initiatives that make a visible difference within their schools and communities.

Beyond recycling, the program promotes a broader understanding of responsible consumption, waste minimization, resource conservation, and environmental leadership. By embedding sustainable habits into everyday school life, we inspire learners to become advocates for environmental change both at school and at home.

Why We Need the Schools-Recycling Program

South Africa continues to face growing challenges related to waste generation, illegal dumping, pollution, and low recycling rates. Many schools have limited access to structured recycling education and waste management systems, resulting in valuable recyclable materials being discarded and environmental awareness remaining low.

The Schools-Recycling Program addresses these challenges by:

  • Teaching learners why waste reduction, recycling, and responsible resource management matter.
  • Setting up practical recycling systems in schools that drive lasting behavioural change.
  • Cutting down landfill waste through effective separation and recycling practices.
  • Encouraging creative reuse and upcycling to spark innovation and environmental responsibility.
  • Creating cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable school environments.
  • Empowering learners to spread positive environmental behaviours within their families and communities.
  • Supporting the shift towards a circular economy where resources are reused and valued rather than wasted.
  • By empowering learners to view waste as a valuable resource rather than a problem, the program helps build environmentally conscious schools and communities that contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable South Africa.

    Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Schools-Recycling Program contributes directly to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: Giving learners practical environmental knowledge and sustainability skills for life.
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Building cleaner, greener, and more resilient communities through better waste management.
  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: Promoting waste reduction, recycling, resource efficiency, and sustainable consumption habits.
  • SDG 13 – Climate Action: Lowering the environmental impact of waste while encouraging climate-conscious behaviour.
  • SDG 14 – Life Below Water: Keeping plastic and other waste out of rivers, wetlands, and oceans through responsible waste management.
  • SDG 15 – Life on Land: Reducing land pollution, protecting ecosystems, and encouraging responsible stewardship of natural resources.
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Partnering with schools, municipalities, recycling organisations, businesses, and communities to strengthen environmental education and grow recycling initiatives.
  • Through the Schools-Recycling Program, Backyard Farmers is nurturing a generation that understands the value of responsible resource management and recognises that every recycled item contributes to a healthier environment. By transforming waste into opportunity, we are empowering schools and communities to become active leaders in building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
